The Household of God: Instructions for the Wealthy
We are the Household of God. The church is the assembly and sanctuary of God’s people and the way in which Jesus Christ continues his mission of revealing God’s truth and love to the world. As the Household of God, we need to learn the ways to conduct ourselves as the adopted children in God’s house. The series “The Household of God” is a study of 1 Timothy and Paul’s instructions on how we are to conduct ourselves as those loved and redeemed by God.
In 1 Timothy 6:17-19, Paul uses one of his last two paragraphs to address the topic of money. The reason this is brought up is that Paul felt the importance of the topic for the church. In fact, Paul has already addressed the topic once in the letter. Paul tells Timothy that money is the “root” of all kinds of evil, specifically the “craving” of it. It is a temptation, trap, and can lead to ruin. As such, Paul’s instruction is incredibly relevant. He isn’t using this as a tactic to get people to give more to the early church but did do it as a way to point out the dangers of money in the lives of believers.
